Project Description

The SIAC brings together organizations and service providers who work with victims of domestic violence to increase their knowledge and understanding of strangulation which will enhance victim safety, increase offender accountability and prevent the occurrence of strangulation assaults. The SIAC is made up of members from the EPS, City of Edmonton, Women’s Emergency Shelters, a University of Alberta Physician and the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service. The goal is to increase awareness of strangulation amongst service providers, medical community, policing and the Crown’s office to enhance victim safety and offender accountability. In order to create a collaborative approach to identifying strangulation, the EPF is funding the development of a White Paper to recommend best practices for Edmonton and area on providing strangulation identification training and community engagement.
